Essential bridge replacements completed on Scotland’s Railway during testing times

Story Contracting are proud to be delivering essential works to help keep the transport infrastructure operational, to allow trains to run for key workers and move vital freight goods across the UK.

We are also extremely proud of our project teams who quickly implemented numerous additional health and safety measures on our essential sites, to help keep each other safe during Covid-19.

Despite these challenging times, our Scotland team have been able to celebrate the success from two recent 54 hour disruptive possessions to remove and replace bridge decks at Challoch Clumps and Birks.

Challoch Clumps Underbridge Replacement, Dumfries and Galloway
The main scope of works at Challoch Clumps, located on the bi-directional, single track between Stranraer & Girvan, was to renew the superstructure in its entirety. This included placing a U-Type steel deck with ballasted track supported between new precast concrete cill units.

Birks Underbridge Replacement, Auchtermuchty, Fife
The main scope of works at Birks, located on the bi-directional, single track Ladybank line, involved the removal and replacement of a failing timber deck, track off and on of 90ft of rail, timber deck works, replacement of 1no steel girder, waterproofing and drainage works.

“A huge thank you to our Story Scotland team and supply chain for the safe and successful line hand back, ahead of programme, on these two essential bridge replacement projects.

The team spirit shown to safely deliver on all our essential sites, to help keep Scotland’s Railway moving during these tough times, has been phenomenal.”  John MacArthur, Managing Director, Story Scotland

Both projects are on programme for completion this month, despite the unprecedented challenges the teams faced due to Covid-19.
