Story Contracting has been appointed by Network Rail to deliver a major staircase upgrade project at Manchester Victoria station.
The scheme will see our team construct two new staircases on the station’s main link bridge, improving access between the concourse and platforms 4, 5 and 6. Once complete, the additional staircases will help improve passenger movement through one of the North West’s busiest railway stations.
Works began in September 2026 and will continue through to spring 2027. As principal contractor, Story will deliver the project within a live station environment, working closely with Network Rail and station operator Northern to ensure the station remains operational throughout construction.
The project forms part of Network Rail’s wider programme of rail investment across Greater Manchester and the North West, which aims to improve rail capacity and support future service improvements.

Manchester Victoria remains open throughout the works, with train services continuing to operate and lift access maintained for passengers during construction.
