Story Contracting is delivering a range of projects for United Utilities across Cumbria, helping to improve the resilience, reliability and performance of wastewater infrastructure that serves local communities. From flood resilience measures and network upgrades to site-enabling works and storage improvements, our teams are supporting investment across multiple sites in the county.
Rockcliffe Wastewater Treatment Works
At Rockcliffe Wastewater Treatment Works, Story is delivering works as part of United Utilities’ Better Rivers programme. The project includes enabling works ahead of the construction of a new balancing tank designed to improve storage capacity. Early works have included the installation of a haul road, hardstanding areas, and welfare facilities, helping to prepare the site for the next phase of delivery.
Armathwaite Wastewater Treatment Works
At Armathwaite Wastewater Treatment Works, our team is installing a new 1,200mm HDPE Weholite pipe, along with associated chambers and a Hydro-Brake flow control system. Once complete, the scheme will improve the performance and resilience of the wastewater network, helping to reduce the risk of storm overflows and environmental spills during periods of heavy rainfall.
Cark-in-Cartmel Wastewater Scheme
The team has also recently reached a key milestone on the Cark-in-Cartmel wastewater scheme. Positive feedback from United Utilities praised the professionalism, planning and collaboration demonstrated throughout delivery, with works completed without disruption to local residents despite the challenges involved. The project is a strong example of the collaborative approach between Story, United Utilities, and our supply chain partners.
Longburgh Wastewater Pumping Station
At Longburgh Wastewater Pumping Station, Story delivered works to raise the coping level of the site’s wet wells by 300mm, helping to prevent floodwater entering the facility from the adjacent road during periods of severe weather.
The works included widening existing foundations, installing new formwork and reinforcement, fitting a new davit socket and access covers, pouring new concrete structures, installing replacement handrails and stairs, and raising the site’s ultrasonic monitoring equipment on new support brackets. Together, these improvements will help protect critical assets and improve the resilience of the pumping station during flood events.
