Story Contracting’s Transportation Division in Scotland is proud to announce it has been named Rail Supplier of the Year at the Scottish Transport Awards 2026 for the second time running.
This year’s award recognises the successful delivery of a complex programme of works in partnership with Network Rail, including four major projects completed during the Christmas and New Year period. Across more than 47,000 working hours, works at Exxon Bowling, Drumchapel, Balgonie and Millerhill maximised constrained access to the railway, reducing disruption for passengers while delivering key improvements across the network.
The submission highlighted Story’s ability to deliver high volumes of work within restricted timeframes, completing projects that would typically require repeated closures or months of weekend disruption. This approach improved reliability, enhanced performance, and supported the long-term resilience of the railway network.
A key project within the programme was the Exxon Bowling Underbridge, delivered as part of the Glasgow City Region City Deal, which unlocked a 150-acre regeneration site while keeping the busy North Clyde line operational, supporting future connectivity and long-term infrastructure development.
Across the wider programme, innovative delivery at sites such as Drumchapel transformed traditional low-output working into a highly efficient model, completing works equivalent to around 40 weekend shifts within short, planned access periods. Together, these projects supported wider network improvements, including decarbonisation initiatives and future service enhancements.
This recognition follows Story being named ‘Rail Supplier’ just last year for the delivery of five Access for All (AfA) schemes within a twelve-month period, and again in 2023 for the its aligned approach with Network Rail to put passengers and communities first.
Craig Lafferty, Managing Director – Transportation Division, Story Scotland, said:
“To be named Rail Supplier of the Year for the third time in four years is a huge honour and a testament to the dedication and expertise of the entire team. This award recognises the high standards we deliver across our projects and the collaborative approach we bring to our partnerships, especially with Network Rail and the communities we work in. Improving accessibility across Scotland’s Railway is something we’re incredibly proud of, and we’re delighted to see that impact recognised at this year’s Scottish Transport Awards.
By working as one integrated team, we have been able to maximise constrained access, minimise disruption for passengers and deliver lasting improvements for both the railway network and the communities it serves.”
Story was also shortlisted in the ‘Excellence in Social Value’ category, recognising its commitment to delivering meaningful community benefits alongside engineering works. The Exxon Bowling project delivered over £615,000 in monetised social value, supporting communities across West Dunbartonshire through skills development, education and local engagement.
The Scottish Transport Awards celebrate the very best achievements and innovation across the transport industry in Scotland, recognising projects and teams helping to shape the future of transport across the country.
