Milestone reached on Luton Station accessibility upgrade

Story Contracting has reached a milestone on Network Rail’s £9.5m Luton Station Access for All scheme, with the first section of the station’s new footbridge successfully lifted into place.

The project is transforming accessibility at one of the region’s busiest stations, delivering a new step-free route between all five platforms through the installation of a footbridge and three 16-person lifts. Once complete, the scheme will make journeys easier for passengers with reduced mobility, families with prams, cyclists and those travelling with luggage.

Since construction began in February 2026, Story Contracting has completed a series of enabling and foundation works across the station to prepare for the bridge installation. Key milestones have included a 50-hour possession during which the team installed 100 sheet piles, 200 metres of platform hoarding and new lighting, CCTV and public address infrastructure.

The latest phase of works has seen the first span of the new footbridge lifted into position. When complete, the 56-metre structure will connect all five platforms and provide a fully accessible route through the station. The bridge is being assembled from 18 individual components, with around 140 tonnes of steelwork being installed across a six-week programme.

Alongside the bridge installation, progress continues across the wider scheme, with foundation and enabling works ongoing across the station. The project’s three 10-tonne lift shafts have now been manufactured and are due to be installed as part of the next phase of works, bringing the station a step closer to achieving full step-free access across all five platforms.

Works are continuing on site, with further bridge and lift installations planned over the coming months ahead of the scheme’s completion in spring 2027. Once finished, the project will provide step-free access to every platform at Luton Station, helping create a more inclusive and accessible railway for passengers.
