Story Scotland’s Transportation Division has again been recognised for excellence in rail delivery, winning Rail Supplier of the Year at the Scottish Transport Awards 2025. This marks the second time in three years that Story has secured the prestigious title, having previously won the same award in 2023.
This year’s award celebrates Story’s transformative collaboration with Network Rail to deliver five Access for All (AfA) schemes within a twelve-month period, significantly enhancing accessibility at stations across Scotland. The upgrades at Port Glasgow, Dumfries, Uddingston, Anniesland, and Carstairs (Step-Free Access) have collectively improved the travel experience for over 2.4 million passengers annually.
The winning submission showcased Story and Network Rail’s collaborative team approach to engineering excellence, community engagement, and inclusive design throughout the five projects.
Craig Lafferty, Transportation Managing Director – Story Scotland, said:
“To be named Rail Supplier of the Year for the second time in three years is a huge honour and a testament to the dedication and expertise of the entire team. This award recognises the high standards we deliver across our projects and the collaborative approach we bring to our partnerships, especially with Network Rail and the communities we work in. Improving accessibility across Scotland’s Railway is something we’re incredibly proud of, and we’re delighted to see that impact recognised at this year’s Scottish Transport Awards.”
Michael McArthur, Project Manager – Network Rail Scotland, added:
“It’s fantastic to have won this award. These five Access for All projects reflect the collaborative ethos of Scotland’s Railway and deliver our shared vision of inclusive rail travel. They open up vital services such as employment, education, and healthcare, ensuring that everyone can travel with the same freedom, choice, dignity, and opportunity.”
The projects delivered complex infrastructure improvements, including new step-free footbridges and lifts, while navigating heritage constraints, space limitations, and live station environments. Community involvement played a central role, with campaigners and local groups such as Port Glasgow West Community Council and Grow Uddingston consulted throughout.
In addition to the infrastructure delivery, the Story team contributed over 500 volunteering hours across the Access for All projects, engaging schools with STEM workshops, delivering site tours, and supporting community enhancements such as playground refurbishments and sensory board installations. Upon completion of each project, an opening celebration event was held with the community at each station.
At the awards, the judging panel commended Story and Network Rail’s collaborative ‘Scotland’s Railway’ approach and lasting social impact, noting how they continue to set the benchmark for community-focused rail infrastructure delivery.
