On behalf of Network Rail North West and Central, Story Contracting has successfully delivered complex structural works on Redborough Farm Viaduct in Leighton Buzzard.
With the project scheduled for completion in June, the main works were completed during a 144‑hour railway closure over the Easter bank holiday and focused on protecting the historic Victorian brick arches beneath the railway.
The works, completed in a highly constrained environment, involved excavating the track, installing and waterproofing 96 precast concrete units, and reinstating the track using panel lifters. These upgrades will significantly extend the lifespan of the structure and improve long‑term reliability for passengers.
Alongside the structural works, the team completed overhead line equipment (OLE) adjustments to ensure correct alignment with the reinstated track.
The operation involved multiple engineering trains, specialist plant from Story Plant, and coordinated OLE activity, with around 14,000 working hours delivered across the closure.
Thanks to strong collaboration between Story, Network Rail and the supply chain, all planned works were completed safely and on time.
Following completion of the main works, all four lines on West Coast Main Line were reopened at 60mph, restoring a vital section of the rail network.
This project is another strong example of effective collaboration between Story Contracting and Network Rail to deliver high‑quality infrastructure improvements.
