Are you an experienced Environmental Advisor?
Can you balance construction delivery with the highest standards of environmental stewardship and ecological protection?
Do you want to make a difference in a growing division?
We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Environmental Advisor to join our growing Energy division in Scotland – there has never been a better time to join!
THE ROLE
We are looking for an Environmental Advisor with at least 3 years’ proven environmental management experience, ideally with an Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) background, to lead environmental compliance and ecological constraint management in the Inverness area. This is an opportunity to join our Energy division on a project within one of Scotland’s most environmentally sensitive areas, working closely with clients, regulators, ecological specialists and construction delivery teams.
You will provide practical environmental leadership across the project, ensuring that construction activities meet environmental legislation, planning conditions, licences, permits and project commitments. You will implement and monitor the project’s Environmental Management Plan (EMP), manage ecological constraints and support delivery while protecting sensitive habitats and species. You will also support the company’s Sustainability Strategy and Environmental Management System in accordance with ISO 14001:2015.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead environmental compliance with legislation, planning requirements, licences, permits and project commitments; implement and monitor the Environmental Management Plan (EMP) and associated controls.
Provide practical environmental advice to project management and construction teams, supporting planning and scheduling to minimise environmental impacts and ecological risks.
Manage constraints relating to protected species, habitats and designated sites; coordinate ECoWs, specialists and consultants, review ecological reports and mitigation strategies, and ensure effective mitigation during construction.
Lead site inspections, audits and compliance assessments across all work fronts, monitoring pollution prevention, water, waste and habitat protection; identify risks, implement corrective actions and drive continual improvement.
Investigate environmental incidents and near misses, share lessons learned, and lead the production of Site Waste Management Plans, Pollution Prevention/Control Plans and Incident Response Plans.
Act as a key environmental contact for clients, regulators and statutory consultees; build positive working relationships and contribute to environmental meetings, project planning and progress reviews.
Deliver environmental briefings, toolbox talks and awareness sessions, helping site teams understand ecological constraints and responsibilities and promoting a positive environmental culture across the supply chain.
Prepare accurate, current and auditable environmental reports, inspection records and compliance documentation; maintain registers, permits and monitoring records, and compile KPIs for SSE, other stakeholders and management review.
Support low-carbon solutions, resource efficiency and biodiversity improvements with delivery and design teams; coordinate consultants and contractors on ecological, carbon and other environmental assessments throughout the project life cycle.
Represent Story at relevant industry forums.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
A minimum of 3 years’ proven experience on large-scale civil engineering, infrastructure, utilities or energy projects.
Member of a relevant professional body (e.g. ISEP, CIWEM) - working towards chartered status.
A relevant degree in Environmental Management or a similar discipline.
Demonstrable experience managing projects in environmentally sensitive locations, including protected habitats and species.
Strong knowledge of environmental legislation, planning conditions, licences, permits and industry best practice.
Experience working alongside clients, regulatory bodies, ecological consultants and construction delivery teams.
Proven ability to give operational teams practical environmental advice while maintaining compliance and balancing construction delivery with environmental stewardship and ecological protection.
Excellent communication, reporting and stakeholder engagement skills, including translating technical and legal requirements into actionable advice.
Working knowledge of ISO 14001:2015 and understanding of PAS 2080:2023 Carbon Management in Infrastructure.
An Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) background would be highly beneficial, supporting the ability to understand ecological constraints, supervise sensitive works and maintain ecological compliance across the project.
