Story is a family-owned contractor with ambitious plans to expand into new sectors and regions. We are looking for an experienced Bid Manager who thrives in a hands-on environment with autonomy, accountability and the opportunity to make a genuine impact.

You will join a highly successful work winning team with a track record of securing national frameworks and major multi-disciplinary infrastructure projects. Taking end‑to‑end ownership of bids, you will lead multi-disciplinary teams to develop and deliver high-quality submissions across rail, water, highways and energy. The role remains hands-on, with responsibility for developing written responses and ensuring submissions are clear, compelling and aligned to our win strategy.

Based in our Tamworth or London offices, the role offers hybrid working, typically four days in the office and one day working from home, depending on bid activity.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Head of Bidding, you will:

  • Lead and manage the end-to-end bid process, ensuring submissions are compliant, high quality and aligned to the win strategy.
  • Produce and review high-quality written responses alongside subject matter experts.
  • Drive multi-disciplinary bid teams, including operations, commercial, planning and technical leads, to ensure clear ownership, effective collaboration and timely delivery of all outputs.
  • Develop capture plans, win strategies and bid management plans.
  • Translate client requirements, evaluation criteria and scoring methodologies into clear response strategies and storyboards.
  • Ensure consistency of messaging, structure and quality across all submission content, reflecting win themes and differentiators.

About You

You will be an experienced Bid Manager, or a strong Bid Writer ready to step into a broader leadership role, with the ability to take ownership of complex opportunities from start to finish.

We are looking for someone who is hands-on, delivery-focused and willing to get stuck in. This is not a role for someone who wants to operate at a distance. It will suit an individual who enjoys responsibility, values teamwork, and wants to help shape how we continue to grow as a business.

You will ideally have:

  • Proven experience operating as a Bid Manager or Bid Writer within a construction, civil engineering or infrastructure environment.
  • Demonstrable success in leading and winning complex, high-value bids.
  • Strong bid writing capability, with the confidence to lead and produce high-quality written responses.
  • The ability to lead and co-ordinate multi-disciplinary teams in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships with subject matter experts, and the credibility to challenge constructively where needed.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word and relevant bid management tools.
  • Knowledge of water, rail and/or civils markets would be advantageous, but is not essential.

Why Apply?

·        At Story Contracting, we invest in our people. You’ll benefit from:
