Over the festive period, Story Contracting successfully supported Network Rail in delivering major works on critical projects nationwide.
At the Exxon Bowling site in West Dunbartonshire, works were completed during the Christmas blockade, including the excavation of 22,000 tonnes of material, placement of 8,500 tonnes of structural fill, and installation of a 2,500 tonne underbridge via SPMT (Self-Propelled Modular Transporter). The track was reinstated, and the project was handed back on time, marking another excellent milestone for the team. Also in Glasgow at Drumchapel, essential drainage works were delivered during two disruptive shutdowns at Christmas and New Year, including the installation of three UTX pipes, eight catchpits, and 130m of 6ft drainage, all completed safely and on time with zero accidents or incidents. Remaining drainage works will be completed during upcoming ROTR access to maintain strong momentum into the next phase.
During the New Year possession, major milestones were achieved at Balgonie Square in Fife with the demolition of the existing masonry arch bridge OB090/108, a key stage in the Fife Electrification Project.
Further essential works were delivered at Newport Road Bridge, where six steel piers were installed between existing concrete piers as part of strengthening the LEC 3/84 structure, with steelwork now in place for future jacking operations. At Wolverton Station, Platforms 3 and 4 were upgraded during the West Coast Main Line closure, including coper renewals, resurfacing, Aco drainage installation, and brickwork replacement, with 16,000 bricks being replaced in total. In the week leading up to Christmas, works also continued across Cumbria, including projects at Low Hurst Depot, DEFRA, McVitie’s, and Bendalls.
These achievements highlight the dedication and resilience of Story Contracting teams, who worked tirelessly through challenging conditions and holiday periods to keep projects on track and deliver them safely and successfully.
