On behalf of Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), Story Contracting have completed significant enhancement works at Salford Central Station.
The works at Salford’s largest railway station began in January 2025 with the removal of the cycle hub and the installation of a concrete base for the new ticket office. In February, the station closed for ten weeks to allow major upgrades to take place.

During the closure, a series of major improvements were carried out across the station, a brand-new ticket office was built, upgraded lighting, fire systems, and CCTV were installed throughout the site, and the upper concourse roof was removed before the installation of a new structure. The Platform 1 canopy was extended to the lift, while the ramp roof and adjoining wall were demolished. Platform 2 was widened to improve access to the lift, and its ramp roof was replaced with a new Twinfix roof.
The station reopened in June with the new ticket office in place, but work continued to enhance the facilities. A glazed wall was added to Platform 2, along with help points, lighting, and CCTV. Behind the scenes, the communications room was upgraded, three new AIFA toilets were installed, and new ceilings were fitted in the lift lobbies and upper concourse.
Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett, said: “This much-needed investment in our local rail network and stations is something we have worked closely with partners in the city to secure.
“The works at Salford Central will make it much easier for all passengers to use the station and improve their journeys. This is all part of our wider plans to create a fairer, greener and more inclusive city for all with access to great public transport that connects people with where they need to be.
Tricia Williams, Northern’s Managing Director said: “Salford Central looks fantastic and we’re confident our customers will notice some big improvements, following this £10 million redevelopment.”
Led by TfGM, in collaboration with Network Rail and Northern Trains, the £10m investment is part of TfGM’s ongoing commitment to improving transport infrastructure across Greater Manchester, transforming how people get around the city region and creating a world-class public transport system through the Bee Network.
