Seaton South embankment works completed

Story Contracting has successfully completed essential embankment regrading works at Seaton South, Rutland, on behalf of Network Rail, helping to ensure the continued safe and reliable operation of the GSM1 line.

The project began in September 2024 and was completed in March 2025, delivered on time and to budget.

Works included the regrading of 300 metres of embankment, the installation of 28,000 tonnes of stone, 360 tonnes of pea gravel and 500 tonnes of Type 1 material, as well as vegetation management along the length of the embankment. To complete the scheme, the area was reinstated with fresh topsoil and hydroseeding to support Biodiversity Net Gain.

The regrading has delivered significant long-term benefits. The embankment has been stabilised to improve resilience and track quality for passing trains, while a new toe drainage system will manage water flow more effectively. A safer cess walkway has also been created to provide better access for on-track operatives. Alongside these upgrades, reinstatement with topsoil and hydroseeding has enhanced biodiversity, ensuring positive environmental outcomes.

Chris Ralph, Project Manager for Story Contracting, said: “The completion of the Seaton South embankment works is a great example of the projects we deliver on behalf of Network Rail. The scheme has strengthened the railway, making it safer and more resilient for the future, and was successfully delivered on time, to budget, and with zero accidents.”

With the works now complete, the embankment is safer, more resilient, and ready to support reliable train services for years to come.
