Whether you work on site or in our offices, Story Contracting truly is a great place to work. Meet some of our Graduates and Trainees below to find out why…
Prior to joining Story Contracting, Claudia studied an Integrated Masters in Civil Engineering at Teesside University. She wanted to be in an industry that had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, which attracted her to apply for the graduate programme at Story.
Claudia assists the lead engineer with the planning and the day-to-day engineering activities during the construction stage of the project, track monitoring to ensure no works affect the track and the management of the quality of works done on site.
“Everyone at Story has been willing to help me in any way they can, making a very welcoming, inclusive and encouraging environment to work in – especially as a woman in engineering.”
Prior to joining Story Contracting in 2018, Jamie gained his Undergraduate and Postgraduate Degrees at the University of the West of Scotland and Strathclyde respectively. Between these studies he gained experience as an Assistant Estimating Engineer for a piling contractor.
The Graduate Scheme offers Jamie the opportunity to undertake a variety of roles including a Trainee Project Agent role and an external design secondment.
“My role is exciting as it gives me exposure to being both on-site and, in the office, seeing the project transition from planning and design to real-world application. I am looking forward to undertaking different roles within the company, broadening my skills and understanding of the industry.”
Prior to joining Story Contracting, Grant worked at Nestle as a Multi-skilled Maintenance Engineer, before travelling around New Zealand. He was attracted to his trainee role due to the large and work Story carry out.
As a Trainee Engineer, Grant assists with all technical aspects of engineering, both on housing sites and civils projects.
“My favourite thing about my role at Story is being out on site working full-time whilst gaining a huge amount of on the job training from the Engineer I shadow and work with.”
Lara joined Story Contracting’s Graduate Programme in 2019 after finishing her studies in Architectural Engineering at Sheffield University.
Currently gaining experience as a Project Agent with Story’s Geo-Technical and Ground Investigation (GI) team, Lara’s first Story project is the stabilising and strengthening works at Hessle Foreshore, Hull.
Lara is responsible for reviewing monitoring results on track to assess movement, and how it may affect future works.
“My favourite thing so far has been going on site at Hessle to help determine how we will get plant and equipment on site, and the buildability of current designs.”
Trainee Quantity Surveyor
Chris joined Story Contracting in 2017 to work in the Story Scotland division, dividing his time between working and studying towards a degree in Quantity Surveying. He was attracted to his position at Story due to its reputation and rapid growth, wanting to be a part of the business going forward and contribute to success in the future.
He enjoys the variety each day brings as there are a wide range of exciting projects to work on. Recently, he’s been involved in projects such as Blackford Level Crossing Replacement and Cupar & Singer Access Staircase Replacements.
“Working with Story whilst attending college on day release, enables me to develop my skill set and ability, both academically and practically.”
Hamza joined Story Contracting, Rail England division after graduating from the University of Leeds with a Masters degree in Civil and Structural Engineering.
Hamza’s current role is as an Assistant Project Engineer and he is currently shadowing a Contractors Engineer Manager (CEM) as part of his first rotation on his graduate programme. His role involves taking part in important meetings with stakeholders, reviewing design drawings and writing various reports in line with Network Rail regulations.
“My favourite part so far has been witnessing my personal and professional development as I’m continuously facing new challenges and experiences, providing multiple opportunities for learning. I’m excited for the future and fulfilling my potential.”
Macey joined Story in June 2019 as a Trainee Estimator for the Rail England division.
As a Trainee Estimator, Macey’s role consists of producing high quality, commercially viable work winning tenders with the support of estimators and the lead estimator. As well as this, building and maintaining effective and genuine client relationships will be a key accountability in my role.
“My favourite thing about Story Contracting is the family environment where everyone is extremely friendly and eager to help and support me.”
Assistant Quantity Surveyor
After leaving Sixth Form in 2016, Molly joined Story Contracting. As a Trainee Quantity Surveyor, Molly’s role involves keeping a close eye on the project finances and contractual relationships. She measures and values works, undertakes cost forecasts, produces financial reports and price variations, completes CVRs and manages subcontractors. Molly is also currently in her third year at Northumbria University.
“My favourite thing about working at Story Contracting is the people. The wealth of knowledge the staff have here is invaluable and everyone is always happy to help. In my opinion, the majority of my learning is done on the job, not in the classroom.”
