Ground breaking Ceremony Launches Construction of Balgray Station

Story Contracting was proud to attend the official launch of the construction of the brand-new Balgray railway station in Barrhead, a key infrastructure project for the area.  Delivered in partnership with Network Rail, East Renfrewshire Council, Transport Scotland, and ScotRail, the new station will significantly improve transport connections for Barrhead and the wider community.

Set to open in Autumn 2026, Balgray Station will offer residents improved access to Glasgow for work, education, and leisure. The station will feature:

  • Two fully accessible platforms connected by a footbridge with lifts

  • Waiting shelters, ticket machines, and secure cycle storage

  • An 80-space car park including electric vehicle charging points

  • New pedestrian and cycling pathways linking to nearby residential areas

  • A new bus turning circle and stop delivered by East Renfrewshire Council

The project is part of the Glasgow City Region City Deal, a major investment programme funded by both the UK and Scottish Governments to drive regional economic growth and promote sustainable transport solutions.

Craig Lafferty, Managing Director – Transportation, Story Contracting Ltd, said: “Balgray Station is a key project for our Transportation division and represents a fantastic opportunity to continue our strong relationship with Network Rail.

Delivering a new station that will improve connectivity and bring lasting benefits to the Barrhead community is something we’re proud to be part of. We’re looking forward to getting started on site and working collaboratively with our supply chain partners to deliver this important piece of infrastructure.”

Margaret Gibb, Commercial Director, Network Rail Scotland, said: “Breaking ground at Balgray is a major step forward in improving transport for the Barrhead area. The new station will make it easier for people to travel to and from Glasgow, and for locals and visitors to connect with places like Dams to Darnley Country Park.

“It’s exciting to see work begin on a project that also supports active travel, encouraging more walking and cycling too. We’re proud to be part of a partnership delivering real change and long-term benefits for people in Barrhead and the surrounding area.”

The start of construction follows detailed preparatory work that began in October 2023. The final station proposal was approved by the Glasgow City Region City Deal panel in September 2024.

Story is proud to play a key role in delivering a station that will bring long-term benefits to the Barrhead community and beyond. We look forward to an exciting year ahead!
