Senior Project Engineer/ CRE - Track

We have an exciting opportunity for a Track Senior Project Engineer/ CRE to join our Central Region, based from our Birmingham office - and there has never been a better time to join!

The Role

Reporting to the Regional Engineering Manager the role shall increase the track engineering competency and capability of the Central region and technical permanent way advice and support to the project teams.

To provide technical support for the track engineering discipline and assurance to the project cycle by carrying out the role of Track CRE. Focusing on bringing innovation and challenge to the design process, together support to development throughout the planning and construction phases of individual schemes.

The role will be partly site-based and partly office-based.

The site-based aspect of the role will be to work with Contracts Manager’s project management teams, to offer site technical support, ensuring that robust and appropriate quality and inspection and test plans are in place, being adhered to and as-built information including acceptance testing and site records are being documented and checked against the design and specification requirements.

The office-based aspect of the role will be to discharge the duties of either PE, DPE or Track CRE Construction (under mentorship, where required) in accordance with NR/L2/RSE/02009, and to support the project and engineering management teams with the production of critical safety, technical and quality paperwork.

We are seeking candidates that can manage and support the technical aspects of a project throughout the full lifecycle, from early design and feasibility phases through to delivery and successful hand back on site with a key focus on management of temporary works and quality.

Key Responsibilities;

  • Lead on track engineering/ technical aspects of project delivery with both our engineering and project delivery teams. This will include permanent way construction management, providing site support, managing, reviewing, auditing and promoting site quality checks and technical reviews of QITP’s, QA controls and checks, and safe technical methodologies.
  • Providing track construction engineering assurance, including implementation of interventions and rectification to maintain compliance with our Quality and Engineering Management Plan.
  • Ensure requirements for Track Monitoring, Track Construction, Critical Rail Temperature and Track Handback are delivered by the team in accordance with generated plans and standards.
  • Under mentorship and where required, discharge the duties of Track Contractors Responsible Engineer (CRE) in accordance with NR/L2/RSE/02009 on behalf of Story Central on a scheme-specific basis throughout the lifecycle of the project.
  • Working with the Regional Engineering Manager, undertake and/ or ensure technical resource is available for undertaking duties of Track Handback, TQS and/ or watchperson, ensuring all assurance/ handback paperwork is prepared and completed, such as TEF3203 infrastructure conformance certificate, TEF3034 platforms and clearance, TE3010 stressing forms, TEF3050 datum monitoring sheet, etc.
  • Provide support to delegated roles in the delivery of specific duties.
  • Manage the track handback or Entry in to Service process to ensure successful handover to the client.
  • Engage with Story’s career development and mentorship programmes, to both develop towards Track CRE and/ or CEM status, and provide mentorship and support to our graduates, undergraduates and trainees, to assist in their development.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Qualified to degree level, HNC/HND or equivalent in civil or track engineering.
  • Be working towards or be a member of a suitable professional institution.
  • Experience of working within the rail industry with a level of proven capability in track delivery and an overall knowledge of multidisciplinary work areas.
  • Have a good level of understanding on all current safety legislation and be able to contribute to the safe management of design, development and construction.
  • Have in-depth knowledge of Network Rail Standards and the Engineering Lifecycle of a project
