Project Manager - Geotech – Story Scotland

Due to our growth and continued success of our Geotech team, we have a vacancy for a Project Manager.

Based from either our Normanton/Chorley/Carlisle or Blantyre office, you will be responsible for the production of work planning documentation and reporting, contributing to programmes and maintaining a high standard of documentation. The works could range from Site Investigation, through to monitoring, piling schemes, or major earthworks works so the ideal candidate must be flexible.

Participating in site activities, you’ll conduct site inspections and attend both internal and client meetings, to ensure high level of client satisfaction.

You will have extensive Rail experience and/or construction/highways experience, proven project management skills and a track record of leading and developing people and building teams. With excellent communication skills, you will be customer focused with the ability to engage with clients and build relationships.

The Role

Reporting to the Senior Project Manager or Departmental lead as appropriate for the scheme our Project Managers are a key part of our professional and enthusiastic Geotech Division. The role is 90% office based and requires continuous client liaison from project award through to completion therefore the PM must possess excellent organisational and communication skills.


  • Plan and manage projects and business operations within their scope of responsibility
  • Develop and maintain existing and new business in conjunction with the senior leadership team
  • Confident and knowledgeable of a range of geotechnical disciplines 
  • Prepare Health & Safety documentation prior to and during the site works phase, as well as assisting with the managing the Health & Safety of operatives and promoting a safe working environment
  • Day to day responsibility for planning, supervision and programming of GI projects at locations throughout the United Kingdom.
  • Project Manage various small to large scale (>£500k) projects from award through to project completion
  • Document control via Story Contracting web-based portal.
  • Compile monthly financial project accounts and assist the leadership team in maintaining the financial performance of projects.
  • Assist the Technical Head in managing the continued technical and professional development of staff within their team.
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical proposals, represent the company at tender visits and assist with the scoping of contracts where required.
  • Have a minimum level of fitness required to undertake all site-based tasks listed above on a variety of sites including active construction sites and linear projects for roads and railways.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • 5-10 years of industry experience
  • CSCS Manager level
  • Excellent awareness of geotechnical disciplines, techniques, procedures, BS (EN) standards and codes of practice
  • Awareness and ability to implement Health, Safety and Environmental legislation
  • Awareness of ICE, NCE, NR contracts and the effective administration of them
  • Good understanding of Geotechnical and Geo Environmental laboratory testing and monitoring
  • Excellent awareness of data presentation
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels
  • Excellent attention to detail 
  • Mobility, flexibility and commitment
  • PTS preferred but not essential (training can be provided)
  • Full driving licence
  • Qualified to degree level in civil engineering/geology/geotechnical engineering or HNC / HND with qualifying experience
  • Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team
  • Ability to build relationships with key stakeholders at all levels
